Much has been written about trying to gather more subscribers. A lot less time has been dedicated to examining why we should be pursuing this goal. It’s assumed that subscribers are worth their weight in gold, but are they really?

Besides that, someone else wrote the same question a few days back and it was here on Sphinn, yet didn't go hot. Kind of crummy, fellow Sphinners :P

I don't believe them to be overrated at all. But then again, I don't concentrate on monetizing them.
I use them as a gauge to figure out if my readers like what I'm putting out there. If I see a lot of referrers from RSS readers, I know that my reader base likes the topic I'm putting out. If I don't see a lot, I know that perhaps I need to change subject matter around a bit to appeal to them more. It's value in that way is incredibil, and irreplacable.

Absolutely.

Subscribers = return visitors = advocates = referrals.

So yes... they are very important.
